Intel core i7 4790K still best buy for 1080P Gaming

 Author’s Opinion :

Here is my opinion on this in form of a short story. I got my hands on this beast Intel Core i7 4790K in 2015 when I switched to this from my old Intel Core i3 4130. At first, I ran this on the bundled stock cooler. I was shocked to see the temperature touching 100C at full load so I turned off the Virtualization and Turbo Boost from the Bios, afraid of burning the processor. Next month I bought an MSI Z97S Krait SLI motherboard and Corsair H80i GT Liquid cooler than I was able to run it at full potential. I was able to overclock mine to 4.7Ghz without playing with Voltages. Bundled it with Gigabyte GTX 970 and I tried almost every game at ULTRA settings till 2017.

I wasn’t able to run games at max settings due to the lower VRAM of the GTX 970 (Only 4GB). With the launch of latest Intel Core i7 8700K, 6 core processor, I finally made up my mind to trade this chip for the next generation as I also upgraded my graphics card to GTX 1080Ti. I was trying to get everything maxed out at 4K. Otherwise, Intel Core i7 4790K was still able to handle everything.

Intel Core i7 4790K vs Intel Core i7 7700K

Intel Core i7 4790K aka Devil’s Canyon is the most powerful processor of the 4th generation, We’re talking about i7s here. It has 4 cores and 8 threads. It was released in Q2’14. The processor has a base frequency of 4.00Ghz and max turbo boost frequency of 4.40Ghz, this processor features a smart cache of 8MB. Core i7-4790K, codenamed ‘Devil’s Canyon’, has both faster base and boost clock speeds than its predecessor, the Intel Core i7-4770K, compared to 3.5GHz and 3.9GHz. The i7-4790K can operate at these higher clock speeds thanks to extra capacitors that help deliver power to the die and a new thermal interface material to improve cooling.

Otherwise, there is little difference between the chips. Intel Core i7 7700K also have the same core count and cache but it has a higher base and boost clock speed. Intel Core i7 4790K has a TDP of 88W while 7700K have TDP of 91W. Bus speed of 7700K is higher than core i7 4790K. Intel Core i7 7700K supports Intel’s Optane memory.

If you’re not concerned about integrated graphics than there is not a huge difference in both processors. The Core i7-4790K is based on a 22nm process and has four CPU cores, as well as an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 graphics processor while the Core i7 7700K has Intel HD 630 graphics processor. Newer Intel core i7 processors also have intel optane memory support.

A powerful processor and the Core i7 to buy, but it requires real effort to overclock it.

Intel Core i7 4790K vs Intel Core i7 8700K

There is no competition between the devil’s canyon and Intel’s 8th generation beast core i7 8700K. Due to increase core count, Intel Core i7 8700K is far ahead in the benchmarks and multithreaded performance. But we can compare the gaming performance of both chips by coupling them with the same high-end graphics card. Clock Speed:

This quad-core processor features a 4.0GHz base clock with turbo boost of 4.4Ghz.

Additional CPU features:

The Core i7-4790K carries two professional features that the Core i7-4770K lacked. It provides support for Intel’s Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX) and I/O virtualization (VT-d). VT-d allows a virtual machine to assign specific I/O devices to a particular virtual machine. Both of these are specialized features, particularly TSX, which offers programmers the ability to design multithreading applications that scale more effectively than current software—if the CPU supports TSX already.

Overclocking Potential:

According to user benchmarks, Average overclock of Core i7 4790K on liquid cooling is around 5Ghz. Most of the processors are able to achieve 4.7Ghz stable without changing the input voltages. I was able to overclock mine to 4.7Ghz using Corsair H80iGT liquid cooler.

Performance:

I tested the Core i7 4790K using MSI Z97S Krait SLI edition motherboard with 16GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance memory, used a Transcend 250GB SSD for storage. MSI overclock utility is used for overclocking. I’m naive regarding the overclocking scenario of processors. So, at first, I only used basic settings and simply overclocked my processor to just 4.6Ghz to be on safe side. At next step I overclocked it to 4.8Ghz and ran the benchmark using MSI Overclock Utility, that was stable but when I ran Benchmark using CPUZ the system rebooted. After this, I lowered the clock speed to 4.7Ghz and repeated the same benchmark and stress tests. It was stable at 4.7Ghz and I also ran Cinebench and Geekbench at this clock speed. There was around 100 point difference between stock and overclock frequency.

Gaming Benchmarks

The Core i7-4790K failed our 1,920×1,080 Dirt Showdown benchmark and produced an average frame rate of 31.2fps in Dirt Showdown at a resolution of 1,280×720, with graphics detail set to High and 4x anti-aliasing. You may be able to play some older 3D games if you’re willing to compromise on graphics quality and resolution. But the Intel HD Graphics 4600 GPU is better suited to watching videos, browsing the web and running productivity applications than serious gaming.

I’ve tested several games, here are the FPS using both Graphic Cards.

It was able to run all games at max settings with 1080Ti. Although it struggled with 970 while playing PUBG and Rise of the tomb Raider.

Conclusions

We’re not comparing all aspects of this processor with the other processors, Newer processors are meant to be fast as compared to this 4 year old chip. But if you’re tight on budget you can pick this up for your next build as other components like DDR3 rams are also cheap. Moreover, you can also couple this with some cheap liquid cooler. There is not a huge difference in FPS if you’re using a discrete GPU with this processor. You can run almost every game with Ultra settings if your GPU is powerful enough.

Lineage OS 14.1 Installation on Nexus 6P

Lineage OS is the new name for “Cynogen OS” which is no longer available to download.  There are a lot of custom Roms out there, You can flash one of these if you want to get stock android like experience on any android phone.  Custom rom gives new life to your old  Android device. Although Nexus 6P comes with stock android. You can get some additional features by installing custom rom e.g You can customize the user interface with different themes and icon packs. You can also change the notification icons and alter the notification light settings. There is  also an option to customize the startup animation.

The best feature that was missing in stock  android was “night mode”. You can set up Night Mode in Lineage OS and there are also custom options to change  screen colors to warm or cool. Moreover you can alter the screen resolutions in some roms. You can also get rid of some Google Playstore restrictions for Apps. I was able to  install latest Pixel Launcher after installing custom rom. Here in this blog post you can learn the installation of Lineage OS on Nexus 6P using TWRP Recovery. Part 1 : How to Flash TWRP Recovery

  1. Download Lineage OS 14.1 Zip file, TWRP Recovery for Nexus 6P ,GApps Package and Android SDK Tools if you don’t already have these.
  2. Allow OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging
  3. Connect Phone via USB Cable
  4. Open Command Window and Type “adb Devices”
  5. Allow USB Debugging from On Screen Notification
  6. Reboot Bootloader
    – adb reboot Bootloader
    – fastboot flashing Unlock
    – fastboot Flash recovery “twrp-3.0.3-0-angler.img”

Part 2 : Lineage OS Installation from Recovery

  1. Boot into recovery and do a factory reset.
  2. Go to install and select Zip file for Lineage OS and Gapps
    Swipe to install.
    Wait few minutes
    Wipe cache/dalvik
    Reboot System

macOS Sierra Hackintosh – MSI Motherboard

Here is the main  reason for building a hackintosh; You can save money as high end mac computer are very costly and do not  provide any hardware customizations. You can use your windows computer for Mac softwares by installing mac OS in a separate SSD. I just wanted to check the rendering times on Premier Pro for Mac vs the Windows. I was surprised that the usage was more fluent on the mac OS Sierra. I’m using last generation Nvidia GTX 970  which is entry level GPU for 4K Gaming. After few addons, I was able to get it to work with all softwares. Siri was also working in mac OS sierra hackintosh. My 2 year old computer was able to score a close score to latest Macbook Pro and I was too happy about that.

Here is the complete guide to install macOS Sierra on your computer. I’ve specified all my hardware details here. I faced some difficulties while installing OS X but there was no hurdle in installing the macOS sierra as I already knew all the required Bios settings. Moreover I’ve been experimenting on Hackintosh for more than 1 year now so that experience somehow helped. I was able to get everything working within 2 hours of the installation process. To unable Nvidia Drivers, you have to install nvidia web driver at a latter stage. Same is the case with HDMI audio as it is not enable automatically so you have to run a script to enable it. I’ve added everything in my YouTube video for macOS Sierra installation.

Pre requisites

1. Register at tonymacx86! If you don’t have a user account, create one!
2. Get latest UniBeast and MultiBeast tools from the downloads section.
3. Purchase a 16GB or larger USB drive.
4. Do a full backup of your system. Use a separate HDD or SSD for installation.

UniBeast is a tool that creates a bootable installer out of your downloaded version of macOS.

Note In order to start fresh, you’ll need access to a functional computer running OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later. This is a requirement, as you need access to the Mac App Store to download macOS and create the installation drive.

STEP 1: Download macOS Sierra

The full operating system is a free download for anyone who has purchased Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion or has a Mac preloaded with OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, or macOS Sierra. Download the Application from the Mac App Store using your Apple ID on any Mac or functional computer running OS X 10.7.5 or later.
1. Open Mac App Store
2. Log in with your Apple ID
3. Download macOS Sierra

Note The Application Install macOS Sierra will appear in /Applications.

STEP 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive with UniBeast

1. Insert the USB drive
2. Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
3. Highlight the USB drive in left column
4. Click Erase button
5. For Name: type USB (You can rename it later)
6. For Format: choose OS X Extended (Journaled)
7. For Scheme: choose GUID Partition Map
8. Click Erase then Done
9. Download and run UniBeast
10. Click Continue, Continue, Continue, Continue, Agree
11. At Destination Select, choose USB and click Continue
12. At Select OS Installation screen choose Sierra and click Continue
13. At Bootloader Options screen choose UEFI Boot Mode or Legacy Boot Mode. UEFI Boot Mode is recommended for 7/8/9/100 Series CustoMac desktops and all UEFI capable systems. Legacy Boot Mode is recommended for 5/6 Series CustoMac desktops and all BIOS based systems.
14. (Optional) At Graphics Configuration screen choose the appropriate graphics option for your system and click Continue.
15. Verify installation options, then click Continue, enter password and click Install

UniBeast will now create the bootable USB drive. The process will only take about 10 minutes, depending on system and drive speed. Do not unplug or stop during this time.

16. Drag MultiBeast to your completed USB drive.

STEP 3: Recommended BIOS Settings

Note If you’re installing on a recommended CustoMac desktop with AMI UEFI BIOS, the options are simple. For other systems make sure to set your BIOS to Optimized Defaults, and your hard drive to AHCI mode. Here are standard MSI AMI UEFI BIOS.

To access BIOS/UEFI Setup, press and hold Delete on a USB Keyboard while the system is booting up
Load Optimized Defaults
Disable VT-d
Disable CFG-Lock
Disable Secure Boot Mode
Save and exit.

STEP 4: Install mac OS Sierra

You’re almost done! All you need to do is boot from the USB drive and install!

For best results, insert the USB in a USB 2.0 port.

1. Turn on the computer
2. Press the hotkey to choose boot device (F11)
3. Choose USB
4. At Clover boot screen, choose Boot Mac OS from USB
5. When you arrive at the Installer, choose language.

If you have issues reaching the installer, first make sure you’re using a USB 2.0 port. If you’re using a NVIDIA graphics card you may need to enter the extra boot flag nv_disable=1 to reach the installer. For instructions on entering boot flags see Clover Basics and Switching Advice.

6. For a new installation of mac OS Sierra, you MUST erase and format the destination drive according to the following steps before continuing.

a. In the top menu bar choose Utilities, and open Disk Utility
b. Highlight your target drive for the El Capitan installation in left column.
c. Click Erase button
d. For Name: type El Capitan (You can rename it later)
e. For Format: choose mac OS Extended (Journaled)
f. For Scheme: choose GUID Partition Map
g. Click Erase
h. Close Disk Utility

7. When the installer asks you where to install, choose El Capitan, or your existing install.
8. Upon completion, the system will automatically restart.

STEP 5: Post Installation with MultiBeast

MultiBeast is an all-in-one post-installation tool designed to enable boot from hard drive, and install support for Audio, Network, and Graphics. The installation is complete, but the drive isn’t bootable yet. Boot from the USB again, this time choosing El Capitan.

1. Turn on the computer
2. Press the hotkey to choose boot device
3. Choose USB
4. At the Boot Screen, choose your new El Capitan installation.
5. Complete mac OS Sierra setup
6. Open and run MultiBeast. If your system requires installing Clover to the root of the drive, such as Gigabyte 6 Series and X58 systems, skip to STEP 6.
7. If this is a fresh installation, click Quick Start. UEFI Boot Mode is recommended for 7/8/9+ Series CustoMac desktops and all UEFI capable systems. Legacy Boot Mode is recommended for 5/6 Series CustoMac desktops and all BIOS based systems.
8. Choose the appropriate audio and network options for your system: (Check FAQS)
9. Click Customize for further options
10. Click Print or Save to back up your configuration
11. Click Build then Install

If using a NVIDIA ‘Maxwell’ GeForce GTX 750, 750 Ti, 950, 960, 970, 980, 980 Ti, or TITAN X graphics card, mac OS graphics drivers are not natively supported. Alternate NVIDIA drivers are required.

First Hackintosh Project – OS X ElCapitan

As you know I’m an engineer so I’m using windows as my primary operating system and a lot of 3D modeling softwares are not available for Mac. I started editing videos few months back for my YouTube channel and some clients so I thought that maybe I should try the OS X with Final Cut Pro and see how the rendering times are as compared to Premier Pro on Windows. I also wanted to install some 3D Rendering softwares on Mac for speed and rendering time comparison. Unfortunately I didn’t have a Macbook Pro at that time. So Hackintosh was the only possible way I could get all these software packages.

If using a NVIDIA ‘Maxwell’ GeForce GTX 750, 750 Ti, 950, 960, 970, 980, 980 Ti, or TITAN X graphics card, OS X graphics drivers are not natively supported. Alternate NVIDIA drivers are required.

13. Reboot

You now have a fully updated bootable version of OS X El Capitan on your CustoMac! And a USB rescue drive if something goes wrong.
